Board care
A wooden cutting or serving board will add beauty and function to your kitchen. Proper cleaning and care for your board will help keep it looking beautiful for a long time to come.
serving boards
After using your serving board, hand wash with a damp cloth and a gentle detergent if you so choose. Wash both sides of the board. Doing this provides equal exposure of moisture to the board, lessening the chance of warpage. DO NOT submerge the board in water and DO NOT put the board in the dishwasher or microwave. Exposure to heavy amounts of moisture can cause the board to warp and also increase the likelihood of it drying out and cracking. After washing your board, dry with a towel and store on edge.
Each serving board is finished with two coats of Odie’s Oil, a food safe, hard-wax finish. This finish seriously enhances the beauty of the grain and is the reason it is a different finish than what I use for cutting boards. If your board ever starts to look a little dull or dry, consider purchasing a jar of Odie’s Oil to apply whenever your board may need. It takes a very small amount to coat the board. I am currently less than a quarter of the way through a jar, and have finished around ten projects with it. Odie’s Oil can be used on many surfaces other than wood and for the average person one jar will last many years.
Cutting Boards
After using your cutting board, wipe down the board with a warm, soapy, damp cloth. Make sure to wash both sides of the board as this exposes it to equal amount of moisture, helping prevent warpage. Quickly rinse off all soapsuds and dry with a towel. DO NOT submerge the board in water and DO NOT put the board in the dishwasher or microwave. After drying it is best to store on edge but can be stored flat if the board has rubber feet.
Each cutting board is soaked in food grade mineral oil overnight, and then is applied with two coats of a homemade board wax. Each board comes with a 4oz. tin of board wax which should be applied at minimum once a month. Depending on how much you use your board you may need to apply more frequently. If your board ever starts to get rough or dull looking, this means it could use a coat of board wax. You can never apply or use too much, so apply as often as needed for best results.
